In the second chapel there are the paintings of the Genoese painter Bernardo Castello (1557-1629) who decorated the chapel at the beginning of the seventeenth century. On the vault, scenes of the Childhood Gospels: the centre of the Adoration of the Magi (Matthew 2:12), to the right the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple (Lk. 2: 22-24) and left the Circumcision (Lk. 2, 21). On the altar, the altarpiece of the ‘Adoration of the Shepherds (Lk. 2, 8 ff.). On the side walls of the chapel, the Escape in Egypt (Mt. 2: 14-15) (top right) and St. Joseph’s Dream (Matthew 2: 19-20) (upper left). It is as if this chapel wanted to introduce the faithful / visitor to the knowledge of Jesus, starting right from the first moments of his earthly life: his first meeting with our humanity.
